Wi-Fi & Hotspots
What is Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi or wireless networking is a service which allows computers and laptops to connect without wires to a network, which is usually Internet enabled. To do this computers need to have wireless cards, which are sometimes integrated with the hardware, eg in the case of laptops, and these connect to Wireless Access Points which are part of the network. Most wireless networks are private and secure, requiring knowledge of a keycode for access and are owned by companies or householders.
What is a Wi-Fi Hotspot?
A Wi-Fi Hotspot is a place where Wi-Fi is available as a public service where you can connect your laptop to a wireless network and access the Internet. Nothing to stop you enjoying high-speed Internet access while you sup a pint, quaff a glass of wine or slurp a coffee if that's what grabs you!
Wi-Fi Hotspots are a godsend for mobile and remote working. They are locations where remote web access may be made using a Wi-Fi enabled device, such as a laptop or Wi-Fi enabled Smartphone.
The connection may be chargeable or provided as a free service, sometimes ‘accidentally’ when the owner of a Wi-Fi network has not secured it correctly! Hotspots are great ways of gaining remote web access when working on the move and are often found at venues where the pubic gathers, such as motorway service stations, restaurants, airports, libraries and hotels.
The range of a Wi-Fi hotspot is usually limited to approximately 100 metres and will depend upon possible obstacles to the signal. For secure networks, gaining access to the network will require some form of ‘handshake’ to authenticate your use of the network.
This may be done by configuring ‘key’ information into your devices, or it may be done by some form of ID/password challenge when you attempt to use the service. This latter method can be employed where you have the choice of a range of products from pay-as-you-go to a monthly subscription.
Whether you need a simple wireless network for your office or a large integrated hotspot system with multiple access points say for a hotel, OSYS can help.
